About me

Molecular biologist, bioinformatician

Hello, there! I’m Thyago. I’m a molecular biologist passionate about cutting-edge research, bioinformatics, and gene editing! I’m a strong advocate for open(science, data, source), and reproducible research. My main goal is to use molecular biology and computational/statistical tools to understand biological phenomena and translate these into human health. At the same time, I also work with translational research to foster advanced therapies. During my graduation I worked mainly with transcriptomics, genomics and molecular biology, both wet and dry benches, applied to infectious diseases (mainly leprosy and tuberculosis). Currently, I’m working on CRISPR-based epigenetic reprogramming for treating neurodegenerative diseases.

My most frequently used programming languages are R (stats, data wrangling, data viz.), Python 3 (snakemake pipelines, automation, machine learning) and Bash/Zsh (automation, linux management). I’m also beginner with C++ and Rust.

In my free time I enjoy reading, meditating, oil painting, hiking, music, pets, and learning new stuff.

Experience

Postdoctoral fellow
Feb 2023 – Present Berkeley, California, US
I’m working on engineering CRISPR-Cas epigenome editors for Alzheimer’s disease therapy.

Postdoctoral fellow
Jul 2022 – Jan 2023 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Compiled a workflow for analyzing whole-genome sequencing data of M. leprae using Snakemake and conda environments.

Biological Amabassador (consulting)
May 2022 – Jul 2022 San Francisco, California
Bioinformatics consulting services including beta-testing, bug report, feature development, and technical advisor.

Graduate Researcher (PhD)
Aug 2018 – May 2022 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
In my PhD I apply transcriptomics (RNA sequencing) and mol. bio. to identify biomarkers and novel biological pathways behind leprosy immunopathogenesis, focusing on translational applications. I also had the opportunity to work with genomics bioinformatics, such as targeted-exome sequencing, small-medium scale genotyping and QTL mapping, thanks to internal and external collaborations. In parallel, I work upon improving my coding skills, experiment design, learning about the most relevant database systems and reproducible research techniques/tools.

Graduate Researcher (Masters)
Jul 2016 – Jul 2018 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
For my master’s dissertation I worked with microarray datasets for identifying common biological modulated pathways in leprosy. During this time, most of my bioinformatics skills were consolidated, especially -omics data analysis, scripting, design of experiments and data viz. I also spent some time in professor’s Stewart Cole’s Lab, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, where I worked with RNA sequencing and had some experience in a BSL-3 lab.

Undergraduate researcher
UFG
Jan 2013 – Jul 2015 Goiás, Brazil
During my undergraduation, I rotated through microbiology (Dr. Jupyracyara C. Barros), biochemistry (Dr. Geraldo L. Sadoyama) and molecular biology (Dr. Adriana F. Neves) labs, where I developed skills such as bacterial and eukaryote cell culture, nucleic acids molecular biology, SELEX for aptamer identification, molecular cloning, antimicrobial compound identification and evaluation.
